Equality In Sports? Mens Vs Womens Events

October 1, 2005 / by olympics

For the Winter Olympic Games in Torino, over 2500 athletes are expected to participate in 15 sports and 84 events! For the most part, there is parity or equality in these sports where men and women compete separately in the same or equivalent events. As an example, for the team sports (curling, hockey, cross country relays, etc.) there is an equivalent mens and womens competition. For individual sports, there is parity too - notwithstanding differences in race lengths (e.g., speed skating, skiing, etc.).

THE MOST notable difference, however, is in SKI JUMPING where women DO NOT participate. Despite world-wide events being held each year where women do compete in this sport, the IOC has yet to add this competition for women. The question of WHY still looms...

    Hi There-
I am trying to write a report on fans current satisfactions and disatisfactions concerning the 2006 olympics and I liked what you had to say in regards to the equality in sports. Is there a specific place I can find more information on the topic? Or even get more of your opinion on the topic and what you would like to see for the future/ changes? Thanks so much!!

Just recently, the United States Olympic Committee and the US Ski Federation both mentioned that they plan to "petition" (request) that the IOC add Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined for women to the slate of Winter Olympics Games sports. It's hoped that by 2010 (Calgary, CA) these sports will allow women athletes to participate.
