Behind the scenes, the IOC is currently in deep communications with TOROC (Torino Olympic Committee) regarding an Italian law that could cause athletes who fail drug tests to get arrested and jailed. It seems that Italian laws are very strict when it comes to illegal drug use. If an athlete tests positive for illegal drugs (yes, even those 'doping' drugs), the athlete can be arrested and charged with a criminal offense. The IOC is deeply concerned about this severe treatment and is striving to have TOROC "suspend" the invoking of this law during the Olympic Games so that these competitors will not be charged or arrested. Other nations are in support of this IOC position.
